American Studies Students: Please create a Wiki-Page for your biography project. No need for pictures, etc.--just the text. Place it in the American Studies Biography folder in the navigation panel. All classes will be in the same folder. If endnotes do not copy, then don't worry. The posting is simply so that you can get feedback from your peers before final printing.

Assignment: Carnies at Grapefest.

Compose a creative, descriptive-narrative about your encounter with a carnie at Grapefest. Be sure to visualize this person vividly. Help your reader see the person. Furthermore, describe the setting in which s/he appear. In your interaction, you learn an important life lesson.

Use a minimum of 30 phrases and clauses (adverb, adjective, participial, appositive, absolute). Work in a few dramatic sentences (e.g., one-word sentence, sentence with parallel elements,  dramatic sentence fragment, etc.). Be FUN. Boring narratives will be thrown out.

CREATE A WIKI PAGE TO POST YOUR PROJECT. CREATE A PAGE. TITLE: YOUR NAME + TITLE OF NARRATIVE. DROP IN YOUR PERIOD FOLDER > SUB FOLDER "CARNIES AT GRAPEFEST" (NOTE: LOOK FOR P2, P5, P6, ETC. THIS TRANSLATE TO PERIOD ___. DROP IT IN THE CORRECT FOLDER!

Peer Review Activity: TAKS Tutorials

Individually review the pages of your peers as assigned in class.

Evaluate for the following:

1. Information.

2. Use of Examples/Illustrations

3. Neatness/Appearance

4. Creativity/Interest

Now, on a half-sheet of paper, write the period number and the names of the group members as given on the title page. Then, write a two-sentence reaction for each grading criteria. Then, select a holistic grade from ranging from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most awesome best page in the history of TAKS Tutorial webpages. Create a separate page for each project reviewed. Turn into your teacher at the end of class.

Project: TAKS Tutorial

Form into Wiki-Page teams of three. Review the TAKS Preparation Materials on Mr. Wevodau's website (left margin link).

Create a page into your class folder called TAKS + the last names of your group members. Now, create one or a series of pages offering advice as well as examples to improve TAKS short answer and essay responses. Figure out a way to copy images from the TEA website, which has released tests--with writing samples--for all TAKS tests since the program began.

Add appropriate sounds & visuals.

Divide & Conquer: One person should do layouts, etc. One person should review TAKS samples; One person should scour the Internet for advice & suggestions. (You can copy and paste whatever you want from wherever you want, but be sure to cite your sources!)

Page Writers:

Use the link below to find a basic tutorial for pbworks. Also, note the video below for an illustration of how to change your background. Lastly, in the How To folder in the right margin, a former student explains how to use playlist.com to embed an mp3 player that will automatically start a song of your choice (non-copyrighted). You can embed the player even more simply than the instructions present. Once you've created an account, add a song to your playlist, then click share--and simpy copy the embed code. Use insert above, then html/javascript and copy the embed code.

Above: An sample of the many videos on Youtube that will illustrate how to edit your pbworks page. If you don't have the answer, seek one who does!

This is not the official trailer for the movie; however, there will be a new film version of The Great

Gatsby starring Leonardo Dicaprio scheduled to be released 25 December 2012.

Great Gatsby Activity

Create a page in your class web folder. For the page name, use the first and last name of both you and your partner.

Motif #1: Daisy's Voice

Using the online Gatsby text, locate and copy each time Fitzgerald addresses "Daisy's voice." Paste your findings onto your wiki page. After each quote, identify the chapter from which it came.

Once complete, compose a five-sentence (or more) analytical paragraph drawing your own conclusions as to how Fitzgerald uses Daisy's voice to add meaning to the novel.

Motif #2: T. J. Eckleburg

Do the same as above for the eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg. Will you put this on the same page, or create another page and link them together?

Now: Be creative! Dress up your page. Make it the best one. Decorate. Add relevant video. Attach an avatar to greet your guests. Make your page the most interesting and dynamic one.

Do include the following:

1. An avatar to welcome your guests.

2. Appropriate images.

3. Appropriate video.

4. Music & sound (if able).

5. Background image or color.

TO INSERT ESSAYS AND SHORT ANSWERS INTO WIKI PAGE:

Highlight the image from the TAKS Grading Rubrics, right click and press "Copy Image."

Open Paint from the Start > Accessories Menu and Paste the image.

MAKE SURE that the image fits inside the Paint Canvas, NOT the screen size. Use the arrows at the bottom and the side of the screen to be sure that it fits in the canvas.

Once the image fits the canvas, NOT the screen size, save the image under your H-Drive as a JPEG. It will want to save as a BMP. BE SURE you save it as a JPEG.

When editing your Wiki Page, go to the Insert links tab at the right of you screen. Click "Images and Files" and then press "Upload files".

Go to your H-Drive, find the image, and click Open. It should appear on your Wiki Page:)

Hope this helps! Good luck!
